Add Rice Water to Your Hair Care Routine

Hair feeling a little lackluster? Rice water—yes, rice water—may be just what it needs. Packed with nutrients like vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, and more, rice water boasts a whole list of natural benefits.

How to Make Rice Water:

Start by pouring ½ cup of uncooked rice into a strainer and rinsing it well. Then bring two cups of water to a boil, add the strained rice, and continue boiling the water until it’s cloudy. Turn off the burner, let the water cool, and funnel it into a spray bottle. If you aren’t ready to use the mixture right away, you can store it in the refrigerator.

How to Use Rice Water for Your Hair:

Rice water can be used up to two times per week and is known to be safe for all hair types and textures. Here are three ways to use it…

As a rinse:

After washing your hair, massage in some rice water, and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Then follow with your normal conditioner.

As a mixer:

Rice water can be a bit dehydrating, so if you already have dry hair, you should instead try combining it with your shampoo or conditioner to limit direct contact.

As a treatment:

For maximum absorption of its nutrients, apply the rice water directly to your scalp after shampooing and conditioning. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes and then rinse.

How Hair Benefits from Rice Water:

  • Improves strength

  • Encourages scalp health

  • Calms irritation

  • Boosts shine

  • Supports growth
