You’ve Likely Never Heard of this Weight Loss Secret
Throughout my adult life, I would periodically lose weight without trying.
The first time this happened was when I started an office job where my assigned parking space was a substantial distance away from my desk. Within months, 10 pounds of residual college party weight had just fallen off me. I was absolutely ecstatic, but I couldn’t understand how or why it had happened.
I now know the answer; it was Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)!
NEAT is the amount of calories you burn doing everything except intentional exercise and sleeping. Extremely sedentary individuals may reach a NEAT level as little as 15%. Conversely, very active individuals (or those whose jobs require them to constantly be on their feet) often near a NEAT level of 50%. Unsurprisingly, this gap in energy expenditure can amount to several hundred calories.
Since your body requires a calorie deficit to lose weight, your energy expenditure has to be greater than energy intake. Most commonly, weight loss is approached by increasing your workout time and eating less. However, NEAT activities such as mowing the lawn, cleaning your home, and climbing stairs are already built into your day, and they burn more calories than you think. I personally recommend my clients use the Oura Ring or Apple Watch to keep track of their movements, and time and time again it’s proved to be extremely motivational.
