5 Health Benefits of Flaxseeds
What are flaxseeds?
Flaxseeds are the golden yellow to reddish brown seeds of the flax plant. In ancient times, the plant was cultivated extensively in Egypt. However, they are now grown in regions all around the world with temperate climates.
What’s the best way to eat them?
Whole flaxseeds are difficult to digest, so I recommend grinding them in order to reap all of their nutritional benefits. The seeds also oxidize quickly, so it is best to eat them freshly ground. I personally like mixing them into smoothies, adding them to salads, or sprinkling them atop berries. They have a slightly mild, nutty flavor that perfectly complements both sweet and savory meals.
What are their main health benefits?
1. Rich in omega-3
Flaxseeds are one of the best plant-based sources of ALA omega-3 fatty acids, which have proven heart health benefits and can help lower your risk of stroke.
2. May reduce your risk of cancer
Flaxseeds contain a group of nutrients called lignans — plant compounds that have antioxidant and estrogen properties that can aid in the reduction of cancer development. Research has shown that people (particularly post-menopausal women) who eat flax seeds regularly are at a lower risk for breast cancer.
3. High in fiber
Just one tablespoon of flaxseeds contains 3 grams of fiber, which is 8–12% of the daily recommended intake. One tablespoon also contains a duo of soluble and insoluble fiber that assists with more regular bowel movements.
4. Can help you lose weight
When you eat foods that are high in fiber, like flaxseeds, you tend to feel full for an extended period of time. In turn, your desire to eat is suppressed, and you avoid excess caloric intake.
5. Good source of protein
If you’ve been searching for a good source of plant-based protein, flaxseeds are your answer. Not only will they enrich your heart health, they will also improve your immune health.
