Home Remedies for Age Spots
Anyone over the age of 30 probably knows a thing or two about age spots. Though often harmless, age spots can be a nuisance to those looking to upkeep a young, even complexion. Luckily, these home remedies can help lighten them with just an ingredient or two.
1. Aloe Vera
This thick, short-stemmed plant contains aloin, a natural depigmenting compound that studies have proven to be effective in treating UV-induced and post-acne hyperpigmentation.
Apply pure aloe vera gel to the affected area before going to bed
Rinse with warm water in the morning
Repeat daily until you see results
2. Yogurt
A major ingredient in yogurt is lactic acid, which helps slow the growth of melanocytes—cells that produce melanin AKA dark pigments.
Apply full-fat plain yogurt directly to the affected area
Let it sit for 20 minutes
Rinse with warm water
Repeat twice daily until you see results
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Many people find apple cider vinegar to be a fast-acting remedy for hyperpigmentation, because it contains acetic acid, a natural bleaching agent. (Note: This treatment may irritate sensitive skin types.)
Apply one part apple cider vinegar and one part water to the affected area
Let it sit for 3-5 minutes
Rinse with warm area
4. Green Tea
Green tea contains a compound called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which inhibits a specific enzyme needed to produce melanin.
Place a green tea bag in boiling water for 3-5 minutes
Remove the tea bag and let it cool
Rub bag on the affected area
Repeat twice daily until you see results
5. Turmeric
This is one of the most popular at-home treatments for hyperpigmentation. One study showed a turmeric-based cream reduced dark spots by more than 14 percent over the course of four weeks.2
Mix one part turmeric and one part raw honey to the affected area
Let it sit for 15-20 minutes
Rise with warm water
Repeat daily until you see results
